The solution

A return path, printed onto the document itself.

Docfense is a document protection and reunification platform. Each tag is bound to exactly one document, one serial or registration number, one owner, and one verified notification path. Nothing about the tag is generic, and nothing about it can be reused.

The problem landscape

Documents that prove something about a person are the ones whose loss costs the most. A vaccination record is the difference between boarding and not boarding. A student identity card is the difference between sitting an examination and missing it. Neither can be reissued at the moment it is needed.

Loss is not usually theft. It is a bag on a matatu seat, a wallet on a counter, a booklet left in a tray at a security check. The document survives. The link between the document and its owner does not.

The person who finds it is usually willing. They are also powerless. There is no name they can trust, no number they can dial, and no reason to carry a stranger's booklet around for a week.

Existing answers do not fit. A lost and found desk depends on the finder travelling. A generic QR sticker exposes personal details to anyone who scans it. A digital only credential does nothing for the paper booklet a border officer actually asks for.

How the solution operates

1

Binding

The owner enters the number printed on their document. It is normalised, validated, and stored as a one way hash with only the final four characters kept in clear, so the platform can check a finder without ever holding a readable copy.

2

Serialisation

Each tag receives its own twelve character serial from a cryptographic random source, never derived from the document number, the owner or a counter. A duplicated tag is therefore detectable.

3

Artwork

The tag prints as a square in navy and orange on white, at a minimum of thirty millimetres, with the address written in plain text underneath so a finder whose camera fails can still type it.

4

The challenge

A scan does not open a form. The finder is first asked for the last four characters of the number in their hand. This is the moment the binding stops being a claim and becomes a check.

5

Graded outcome

A correct answer is a verified match. A skipped or failed answer still notifies the owner, clearly marked unverified, because a worn digit must never cost somebody their document. Repeated failures against one tag raise a security alert instead.

6

Dispatch and escalation

SMS goes first, then email, then the dashboard, then WhatsApp where the owner opted in. Every send is logged with its provider status, silence escalates to a trusted backup contact, and a total failure offers the finder a masked relay so contact happens without exposure.

What the owner is left holding

A live dashboard

Every protected document listed with its current status, from draft to protected, in one place the owner can check from any phone.

A notification history

Each alert shows which channel reached the owner and when, so nothing about a recovery is left to guesswork.

Security alerts

Whenever a scan fails the challenge, the owner is told. A copied tag or a suspicious pattern surfaces as an alert, not a surprise.

Full channel control

The owner controls every contact channel, with SMS permanently on because it is the channel that does the reuniting.

The outcomes it delivers

Recovery instead of replacement

A found document reaches its owner in minutes rather than never.

Cost avoided, not insured

One payment against a repeat vaccination fee, a replacement card fee, or a rebooked flight.

Privacy preserved

The finder is identified. The owner is not exposed.

Proof, not promises

Every scan, dispatch, delivery and acknowledgement is recorded, so the recovery rate can be published honestly.

See it working end to end.

Walk the journey from the printed tag to the owner's phone, then protect the document you cannot afford to lose.
