The process
From a blank booklet to a document that knows its way home.
Ten steps. Six of them take you about four minutes on the day you sign up. The other four happen on the worst day, without you doing anything.
Part one: what you do once
Six steps, about four minutes, on the day you sign up.
- 1
Create your account
Name, email address, a password, and the document category you are protecting.
- 2
Enter the document number
The number printed on your yellow fever card or student identity card. You see it normalised as you type, so there is no ambiguity about what is being bound.
- 3
Verify your phone
A six digit code by SMS. This step is not optional, because a tag issued against an unverified number would be a promise nobody can keep.
- 4
Pay once
Card or mobile money through Paystack, in USD or in Ksh. There is no subscription and no renewal.
- 5
Download the tag
A print ready PDF and a high resolution PNG. Print at thirty millimetres or larger, in colour or in black, on plain paper or a sticker sheet.
- 6
Apply it
Inside the back cover for a booklet, the back face for a card. Flat, unfolded, and clear of the edge.
Part two: what happens on the day it is lost
Four steps that run without you doing anything.
- 7
Somebody finds it and scans
Any camera, no application, no account, no cost to them.
- 8
They confirm the number in hand
The last four characters, before any form appears. This is the check that separates a real find from a copied tag.
- 9
You are reached
SMS first, then email, then your dashboard, then WhatsApp if you chose it. If you stay silent, your backup contact is alerted. The finder watches the status change so they never give up in silence.
- 10
You arrange the handover
You have their name, their number, their location and their message. They never receive a single detail about you.
The finder screen at step eight. A static illustration; the real screen looks the same.
What if something goes wrong
The camera will not scan
The address is printed underneath the code in plain text, so the finder types it instead.
The finder misreads a worn digit
The alert still goes out, clearly marked unverified, so a worn corner never costs you the document.
Every channel fails
The finder is offered a masked relay, so contact still happens without your details being revealed.
Somebody scans a photograph of the tag
The challenge fails, no details are exposed, and you receive a security alert instead.
Four minutes now. A recovered document later.
Start with the document you cannot afford to lose, and the worst day gets a lot shorter.
